KING CITY — The King City Mustang boys basketball team will be out to get on the win column after starting the Mission Trail Athletic League season with losses to Carmel, Soledad and Pacific Grove. The Mustangs lost MTAL games last week on the road to the Aztecs and at home to the Breakers.

In the 71-53 loss to Soledad foul trouble cost the Mustangs as the Aztecs went to work under the basket. Aztec center was a force for the Aztecs scoring 28 points to lead all scorers.

“The game was close in the first half,” said King City head coach Jesus Ramirez. “We were tied at 14-14 in the first quarter and we finished with a two-point lead at the end of the half at 30-28. In the second half we came out flat and we got outscored 43-23. It started in the third quarter when Soledad opened a small lead of six points and continued in the last quarter where Soledad outscored us 20-8 to end the game at 71-53. Our big guys got in foul trouble and Soledad took advantage of it pounding the ball inside.”

Andres Arellano and Cedric Perez scored 11 points each to lead King City in scoring and Andy Barrios joined his teammates in double figures with 10 points.

Two nights against the Breakers the visitors took a 30 point in the third quarter and won the game, 55-36.

“We started off flat from the start of the game and were outscored 31-11 in the first half,” said Coach Ramirez. “We continued flat in the third quarter and PG opened a 30 point lead. Our guys did not give up and started a run in the last minute of the third quarter and cut the deficit to 19 points.”

Barrios led King City in scoring with 12 points, Perez scored 10 points, and Angel Trujillo just missed double-figures in scoring with nine points. King City will play Oakwood tonight and will host Trinity Christian on Friday night.
