Meal giveaway for farmworkers in Greenfield grows to 3,000

GREENFIELD — For the second time, thousands of freshly prepared meals were distributed to farmworker families suffering during the Covid-19 crisis on May 26 at Patriot Park in Greenfield.

The food distribution is the latest effort by the United Farm Workers and World Central Kitchen in partnership with the UFW Foundation and Cesar Chavez Foundation, which is also taking place in other farmworker communities across the Central Coast and Central Valley.

Organizers said demand was so great the previous week, when 2,000 meals were distributed, that the number of meals increased to 3,000 last Tuesday.

The meals, prepared by local restaurants, were handed to long lines of motorists as they drove their cars by the Greenfield park. Everyone working on the premises wore masks, followed CDC guidelines and observed social distancing during the distribution.

Since its founding, World Central Kitchen has served more than 17 million meals to those impacted by natural disasters and other crises around the world, including the coronavirus pandemic.
