Distance runner Luis Meza of Greenfield was the race winner in the 3200 at the Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational. Meza won the race in 10:00. Below, Gonzales thrower Pablo Villasenor won the discus and shot put at the O-Condon Invite at North Monterey County High School on Friday. Villasenor established meet and stadium records with his throws.

SOUTH COUNTY — Track and field teams from Gonzales, Greenfield and King City traveled to meets in Castroville and Pacific Grove this past weekend to complete the Easter break. The Spartans and Bruins competed at the first O-Condon Invite at North Monterey County High School in Castroville and the Bruins and Mustangs competed at the Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational.

The O-Condon Invite took place on the brand new all-weather facility at North County and meet is named in honor of former Condor coaches Keith Condon and Roger O’Sullivan. Condon coached at North County for 30 years and O’Sullivan served as a coach for 26 years. The track events were held in O’Sullivan’s honor and the field events honored Condon. The duo helped the Condors win 36 varsity league championships.

Gonzales thrower Pablo Villasenor put his name on the record board for the event and the new facility with first place finishes in the shot put and discus. Villasenor threw the shot put 45-10 and had a best of 127-0 in the discus.

Other medal winners for the Spartans were Matthew Cortez with a second place finish in the triple jump (39-2 ½); Dominic Emery with a third place time in the 100 (12.2); and Angel Anguiano with a third place finish in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.5.

Gonzales placed third in the boys division behind first place San Benito (Hollister) and second place North Monterey County. Luis Meza of Greenfield won the 3200 in a time of 10:00.

The Gonzales girls placed eighth as a team with San Benito taking first and North County placing second. The Spartan 4 x 100 relay team earned medals by placing third in 54.8. Team members were: Alyssa Martinez, Bianca Sanchez, Athena Landeros, and Madisyn Schweitzer.

Tomorrow at King City the Mustang track program will host the Valley Cluster Meet. On Thursday, April 19, King City will host the Mission Trail Athletic League Frosh-Soph Championships.
