KING CITY — King City High’s flag football team claimed two wins last week in the Mission Division.
The Mustangs began the week with a 48-0 shutout win over the Soledad Aztecs last Monday, and downed the host Pajaro Valley Grizzlies, 26-12, last Wednesday in Watsonville.
At home against Soledad, five different players scored for the Mustangs in the lopsided win. Mayte Sarabia scored on a run and a 30-yard pass play from quarterback Katia Slama, who also ran for two touchdowns. Alondra Herrejon and Melissa Iglesias scored on pass receptions from Slama, and Shyrah McDonald completed the King City scoring with a two-yard run.
“It was a great team effort for us,” said King City head coach Brent Slama. “We held them to minus seven yards for the whole game. We started 0-3 but have benefitted from going out and playing with very tough teams.”
In the win over Pajaro Valley, King City freshman Sofia Perez had three interceptions and Marali Ortiz had two interceptions. Katia Slama passed for 181 yards, rushed for 38 yards and had three rushing touchdowns. Shyrah McDonald had eight receptions for 119 yards and 28 rushing yards. Melissa Iglesias had seven flag pulls and Joscelyn Acevedo finished with two sacks.
“Our season will likely come down to how we do in our home games against Watsonville and Pajaro Valley,” said Coach Slama. “Our loss to Watsonville was tough as we had opportunities but weren’t sharp.”
King City (2-1 in Mission, 4-4 overall) played at North Salinas on Tuesday and then heads to Santa Clara on Thursday.
Greenfield (1-1 in Cypress, 1-6 overall) lost to Everett Alvarez, 20-0, at home last Monday. The Bruins played at Rancho San Juan on Tuesday and will compete in Salinas against North Salinas on Thursday.
Soledad (1-1 in Mission, 2-1 overall) played at home with Pajaro Valley on Tuesday and competes at Everett Alvarez in Salinas on Wednesday.
