To the Editor:
On November’s ballot there will be a measure to increase the King City sales tax from 8.75% to 9.25%. This increase would bring us more in line with other towns in the valley.
Up to now, so many improvements have been made in our community because of grants and what we can fit into the city budget. However, more is needed. By spending a 1/2 cent more in sales tax, we will be able to increase the scope of the budget to include other necessities.
These are a few examples of things on the unfunded priorities list. We need another safety resource officer to cover the schools. We need expensive street improvements, which are on a 12-year plan of maintenance and repair. We need to upgrade parks and recreation buildings and services. Various city buildings need new roofs and painting.
If the measure passes with just over 50%, it is estimated to bring in an additional $1.2 million each year for 12 years starting on April 1, 2025. There would be annual audits and a citizen oversight committee. Because the greatest amount of sales tax is collected at the gas pumps, much of the tax is paid by travelers.
I have never written an endorsement for a sales tax increase before. My justification is that I see good things are happening in King City, and I would like to keep it going. I have been on the budget committee as a private citizen for a few cycles and I have seen the city pay off the debt and spend our money wisely.
If you are a King City resident, please join me in voting “yes” for the 1/2 cent sales tax increase to keep King City moving forward. Thank you.
