Demand action now
I invite your readers to acknowledge the passing of John Lewis by demanding action in the U.S. Senate to pass H.R. 4, the Restore the Voting Rights Act that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring to a vote for 225 days.
Congressman John Lewis’ death last Friday has led to calls to pass H.R. 4 in his honor. I believe doing that would honor his contributions to this nation far more than any words of tribute.
I also urge all voters to demand Congress fund efforts to expand the use of mail ballots in the November presidential election. Voting by mail is the most effective way to prevent Covid-19 from reducing voter turnout.
The right of all citizens to vote, which John Lewis rightly names “the most powerful, non-violent tool we have in a democratic society,” must be exercised and protected.
It is up to each of us to take our civic responsibility to do so seriously.
