To the Editor:

I would like to take the time to commend our City Council, Mayor Mike LeBarre, City Manager Steve Adams, our Police Department headed by Chief Keith Boyd, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office for their thoughtful responses to the King City area’s homeless issues.

Our city is working diligently to help find safe housing for our homeless population by acquiring state monetary grants to convert a local motel to housing. While developing the new housing, these agencies are working with property owners to not allow expansion of the shelters built in the river area.

Balancing the needs and rights of our homeless and the needs and rights of our homeowners/landowners is difficult, but our local agencies are doing a proactive job at achieving the right balance between these conflicting issues.
