KING CITY — The King City High Lady Mustang and Lady Bronco volleyball team got a chance test themselves against league opponents last Saturday as they participated in the Gabilan Division varsity and junior varsity jamborees at Salinas and Hollister. King City is now a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Gabilan Division.
“We played five teams at Salinas High on Saturday,” said King City head coach Christine Luna. “All the teams are members of the league that we are in this year. It was a good warmup to get a feel for what we will be facing in league. Now we will be getting ready for our first preseason game on Thursday at Alisal.”
Luna takes over the Lady Mustang team after serving the Lady Bronco team. She moved up when Debbie Hudson resigned from coaching the team.
While Luna runs the varsity team, Sarah Shepherd will serve as head coach for the Lady Bronco team. She is being assisted this season by Julie Hood.
On Saturday the Lady Broncos played in the JV jamboree at Hollister High School.
“It was a great experience,” Shepherd said. “It gave the girls an opportunity to see the level of play with the changes in the new league. As coaches we are really optimistic for the weeks to come. Our girls played well and were extremely aggressive on the serving line. Our standouts were sophomore Johana Valdez for most touches in the back row and she had some great swings in the front row. Our starting setter, Jennifer Lugo, came in with great hustle. Breanna Owens had a great serving game against Notre Dame. We also threw freshman Ximena Denia into the position of middle blocker during one of our games. She worked hard and never missed a beat. We saw potential and can’t wait for the season to start.”
