KING CITY — King City Police Department has received a $56,800 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support traffic enforcement and education programs aimed at reducing serious injuries and deaths on local roads.

The grant program runs through September 2027 and will fund efforts targeting dangerous driving behaviors, including impaired and distracted driving, speeding and failure to yield.

“We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety,” said King City Police Sgt. Cody Hughes. “Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone.”

Planned activities include driving under the influence checkpoints and patrols, high-visibility enforcement of California’s hands-free cell phone law, and operations targeting violations that put pedestrians and bicyclists at risk.

Officers also will focus on violations that contribute to crashes, including running stop signs or red lights, improper turns and lane changes, speeding and failure to yield.

The funding will support community presentations on distracted and impaired driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety, as well as joint enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.

Officer training and recertification in standardized field sobriety testing, advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement and drug recognition also will be supported.

“Through focused traffic enforcement and education, we’re working toward a future where everyone will be safe on California roads,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “By encouraging people to prioritize safety in their daily choices, we are creating a strong road safety culture together.”

The program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
