WATSONVILLE — The King City Lady Mustangs placed second in the gold division at Saturday’s Watsonville Volleyball Tournament, falling in the championship game to Mountain View. King City defeated the York School, North Monterey County, and Sobrato to reach the championship round.

“We were in control of the first match but let it get away 24-26,” said Lady Mustang head coach Debbie Hudson. “We couldn’t come back and lost the second game 7-25. It was a good tournament and we will continue to work hard and be ready for league.”

King City improved to 5-0 in non-league games last week with win over the Notre Dame Spirits and the Everett Alvarez Eagles. Last Tuesday in King City Grace Shepherd had a game-high 27 kills and added 18 digs in the win over Notre Dame. Megan Flores contributed with 30 assists and 23 digs, Delaney Carroll had nine kills and two blocks, and Nancy Andrade added 14 digs. Game scores were: 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18.

Two nights later in Salinas the Lady Mustangs swept Everett Alvarez, 25-12, 25-23, 25-17. Shepherd led King City in kills, followed by Flores with seven, and Carroll with four. Andrade led the visitors with 14 digs, Ana Mendez had six, and Julyssa Arreola added five.

Last night King City traveled to Pacific Grove for the first Mission Trail Athletic League game and will be on the road tomorrow to play Santa Catalina in Monterey.
