KING CITY — Ethan Alatorre and Katherine Carrasco were the first and second place finishers in the third annual Color Mee Run on April 1.

Alatorre decided to compete in the run with a goal of beating his brother.

“It was pretty cool,” Alatorre said. “I’d never came in first in a run before. I was actually looking forward to it all week because we had kind of been training for it.”

The race marked the first for Alatorre, whose father is the president of the Mee Memorial Foundation, which hosted the event.

About 20 racers began either the 3K or 5K run/walk around King City, and when the race was finished, the participants were colored red, blue, yellow, green and more with chalk dust.

Participants included Gissel Hernandez, Jazmin Silva and Clarice Jaime. The Color Mee Run marked the second time for Hernandez and the first for Silva and Jaime.

“The chalking was the best part,” Hernandez said. “It was very exciting and fun.”

All three said they would participate in the race event again.

Although the event included middle school students, parents also participated. One reason for participating in the Mee Memorial race was to improve her health, said Cristin McKee. Kevin Roberts participated in the run/walk with his son, George, because he wanted to exercise.

“I want to improve my health and then get back into running,” Roberts said.

Karen Park has a love for running and said she loves to give money to a worthwhile cause and she does it for the T-shirt.

Jaime Tugel competed with her step-son as something fun to do and it was also their first time.

The Color Mee Run raffled off two bicycles and two skateboards and was the culmination of “Week of Wellness” for Mee Memorial Hospital, which put on various events throughout the week, including a blood drive and Farmer’s Market.
