SALINAS VALLEY — The high school flag football season began last week with three South Monterey County schools participating in the Pacific Coast Athletic League; King City and Soledad in the Mission Division and Greenfield in the Cypress Division.
The King City Mustangs began the season with a 19-17 loss at home to Palma and a 33-0 loss to San Luis Obispo on the road.
In the Palma game, Katia Slama was 24 of 45 passing with one touchdown, two interceptions and 34 rushing yards. Shyrah McDonald had nine receptions for 83 yards and ran for 23 yards. Melissa Iglesias had three receptions and scored a touchdown.
At San Luis Obispo, Slama was 18 of 36 passing for 142 yards and ran for 20 yards. Heidi Medina finished with six receptions for 65 yards and had an interception.
King City played at Paso Robles on Monday and will host Everett Alvarez on Wednesday.
In the first-ever game of their first season, the Greenfield Bruins lost 19-2 at Soledad last Friday night. The program’s first-ever JV team lost 7-6 to the Aztec JV squad. Claudia Villa rushed for the Lady Bruins’ only score.
In the varsity game, the score was 0-0 to start the third quarter, but the Aztecs won the contest 19-2. The two Greenfield points came on a coast-to-coast interception off a point-after attempt by freshman co-captain Madison Mercado.
“This is a new sport for 80% of our girls,” said Greenfield coach Jose Villa. “This week should be better for us. Our girls are feeling more confident and ready for what’s ahead. It was good getting our feet wet and now knowing what to expect.”
Greenfield hosted Soledad on Monday and played at North Salinas on Tuesday, after press deadlines. Soledad will play Rancho San Juan on Wednesday.
