KING CITY — Community members will take over downtown streets this Sunday, April 14, for a day of fun activities promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles during the first-ever Ciclovía King City.
During this free event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., some streets in downtown King City will be closed to motorists so that they can be used for such activities as bicycling, walking, jogging, skate boarding, roller blading and skating, dancing and Zumba classes.
Like last year’s Ciclovía Gonzales, this youth-driven event will allow families and community members the opportunity to “own the streets” as they get to know their neighbors and learn about educational and community resources in the city’s first Ciclovía event.
Broadway Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from First Street to Mildred Avenue, as well as the blocks surrounding the Town Square, beginning at 9 a.m. for organizers to set up. Residents are then encouraged to come out at 11 a.m. to bike, walk, dance and skateboard along the designated streets.
The route will also include resource booths, food, entertainment and other activities along the way.
This family event, presented by the Monterey County Health Department, Building Healthy Communities and the City of King, is funded through a grant from the California Active Transportation Program. It is part of an overall program called Via Salinas Valley: Pathways to Health Through Active Transportation, which is a collaborative regional effort to improve health, access and safety in the Salinas Valley.
Representatives from the Transportation Agency for Monterey County and the Health Department will be offering bicycling safety tips, distributing free bikes, helmets, safety lights and bike bells and providing volunteer services at the event.
Ciclovía King City is expected to draw a crowd of 1,000 people, organizers said.
