KING CITY — The King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will recognize two local residents who demonstrate Hispanic Pride or Orgullo Hispano through community service and leadership in King City. Winners will be recognized on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. during the El Grito Celebration at the fairgrounds in King City on the Steinbeck Stage.

Sonia Chapa, of King City, will receive the Lifetime Community Champion honor.

A lifelong resident of King City, Chapa is retired from the Monterey County Office of Education as an interpreter, is a founding member of the Sol Treasurers Arts Organization and was recognized by the County Board of Supervisors as one of Monterey County’s “Women of The Year” in 2015. She volunteers for several organizations in King City with a focus on education and arts.

Julissa Trujillo, a senior at King City High School, is the recipient of the Rising Star Award. Trujillo is an excellent student and an active member of Girl’s, Inc. Her peers nominated her for her leadership and service to her peers.

The Chamber accepted nominations for the awards from members of the community and selected this year’s honorees from several excellent nominees. Winners will be recognized at the El Grito Celebration and receive a special prize donated by Don Roberto’s Jewelers selected specially for the recipients.

El Grito festivities kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. on Broadway Street with Los Reyes de la Banda leading the procession to the fairgrounds on Division Street. The fiesta continues on the Steinbeck Stage with vocalist Alicia Chavez, the El Grito Shout with Padre Lucas, El Trio los Juanes and a dance party with DJ Sonidos King.

The King City Knights of Columbus will host a Chicken barbecue fundraiser at the event. More than 40 flea market booths, 17 food and produce vendors and children activity booths will add to the fiesta.
