SALINAS VALLEY — With the end of the high school basketball season, it’s time to give out all-league honors and awards to the boys and girls from South Monterey County.
King City Mustangs
King City Mustangs made the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Raul Garcia made the all-league second team in the Cypress Division, while Adan Garcia-Loa received the Richard Chamberlain All-Sportsmanship Team award.
Other varsity award winners included: Samuel Merino (Coaches Award); Garcia (Best Offensive Player); Garcia-Loa (Most Valuable Player); Jjey Martinez (Best Defensive Player); and Brycee Blair (Most 3 points in a single game – 10).
After making the playoffs last year, the Lady Mustangs took a step back this season.
Julia Mendez earned all-league first team in the Cypress Division, and Sage Flores made the all-league second team.
Greenfield Bruins
Greenfield Bruins’ win-loss record of 7-17 this season won’t tell the full story of how this team improved from a year ago. They played a lot of close games that could have went the other way.
Naythen Hernandez was the only Bruins player to make the all-league second team in the Cypress Division.
Once again the Lady Bruins have won the title, and they are proving that Greenfield High School is becoming a basketball power.
Most Valuable Player went to Arianna Villagomez, while Latai Matelau was named Offensive Player of the Year. Villagomez and Matelau also earned all-league first team in the Cypress Division.
Making the all-league second team are Yasmin Avalos and Jimena Hernandez.
Soledad Aztecs
After winning a title a year ago, the Soledad Aztecs took a step back this season, but they were still able to win a playoff game.
Making the all-league second team in the Mission Division is Jason Mendoza.
The Lady Aztecs captured the attention of basketball fans as they had one of the best runs in school history.
Defensive Player of the Year went to Valeria Segura, who also earned all-league first team in the Cypress Division.
Making the all-league second team are Kasandra Lopez and Katherine Amaro.
Gonzales Spartans
For the second straight year, the Lady Spartans have produced another Offensive Player of the Year — Angelina Navarro.
Navarro along with Celeste Camarena earned all-league first team in the Santa Lucia Division, while Alexa Mendez made the all-league second team.
