SOUTH COUNTY — The Greenfield boys cross country team placed second in the Central Coast Division III championships on Saturday to earn a trip to the State Meet.

Greenfield was moved up a division after an increase in enrollment and were beaten 44-54 by the Aptos Mariners.

“I was expecting a tough time with Aptos because they have a tradition of fielding a good program,” said Bruin head coach Angel Villagomez. “We had a few of our runners PR (set personal records), but Aptos had runners in between our second group of finishers to get the win. Our runners had run real well at league and it is hard sometimes to replicate that effort two meets in a row. We are pleased to place second and to go on to State.”

The Bruins were led by junior Rigo Garcia’s fifth place finish in 16:24 to earn an All-CCS medal. Joining Garcia in the top ten were teammates Mauricio Arias (9th place, 16:35) and Julian Arias (10th place, 16:36).

Soledad High ran a complete team in Division III and placed 10th.

The Aptos girls won the Division III title.

Pacific Grove won Division IV and the King City boys placed sixth.

The Santa Cruz girls won Division IV and the King City girls placed eighth.

The California Interscholastic Federation State Cross Country Championships will take place on Saturday, Nov. 25, at Woodward Park in Fresno.
