KING CITY — This is playoff week as far as the King City Mustang baseball team is concerned as wins over the Carmel Padres at home and away will mean a spot in the Central Coast Section playoffs.
At 12-3-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 17-6-1 overall, King City needs to beat the Padres or hope for losses by the league leading Soledad Aztecs to get into the playoffs. Soledad concludes league this week against the Pacific Grove Breakers.
“If Pacific Grove loses once to Soledad we would end up not worse than third and in the playoffs,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “If Soledad were to lose both games to Pacific Grove and we win our games with Carmel we would have to finish the tied game we had with them to determine league. The score was ended at a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth against Soledad.”
In game played last week the Mustangs won a forfeit game to Anzar when the Hawks were unable to field a full team.
Last Friday the Mustangs and Hawks were able to get in a game although the Hawks had just nine players. King City shutout and no-hit Anzar at San Juan Bautista by a 19-0 score.
Five King City pitchers combined to throw goose eggs against the Hawks with Brian Lopez started the game and earning the win. Offensively the Mustangs were led by Clay Barbree with three hits and three runs batted in. Jose Arreola had two hits and three RBIs, Tommy Stephens and John Serrano combined for four RBIs, and Jeovani Santoyo had two hits and two RBIs.
