KING CITY — On July 23, at about 12:10 p.m., King City Police Department was dispatched to Payless Shoe Source, 510 Canal St., for a theft that had occurred.

Upon the officers’ arrival, the investigation revealed a Hispanic male adult, later identified as Martin Elias Torres, 29, of King City, entered the store and removed his old worn shoes, cutting off the security tags off of a new pair of shoes and put them on his feet.

Then, picking up a second pair of shoes, he left the store bypassing an open cash register and making no attempt to pay for the merchandise.

The store employees estimate the loss at about $75. Torres was located at a residence in the 300 block of Ellis in King City, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Torres was still wearing the stolen shoes, with a part of the security tag still attached; he had no money with him and admitted to the theft.

A partial recovery of the shoes was made. The estimated recovery is valued at about $35.

Torres was booked at the Monterey County Jail.
