SMCJUHSD celebrates return to local control
KING CITY — South Monterey County Joint Union High School District will celebrate its successful exit from state receivership and return to full local control during an event Wednesday, Sept. 30, at King City High School.
The celebration is scheduled for 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the school library and will include student performances, remarks from local officials and recognition of the district’s fiscal recovery. The event will highlight the district’s yearslong effort to restore fiscal stability, repay its emergency state loan and strengthen its financial and governance systems.
Student performances will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the program and speakers at 4:15 p.m. The celebration will also include recognition from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, Monterey County Board of Education and the cities of Greenfield and King City.
The event will be held at King City High School, 720 Broadway St. Community members are invited to attend.
Salinas Valley Chamber set to honor local leaders
SALINAS — Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Legacy of Leadership event Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Taylor Building/Portobellos Courtyard in Salinas.
The event recognizes individuals and organizations for achievements in public service, philanthropy, volunteerism and community engagement. This year’s honorees include Harry Wardwell, former executive director of the California International Airshow Salinas, who will receive the Legacy Award; Deneen Guss, Monterey County superintendent of schools, as Public Servant of the Year; Arts Council for Monterey County as Nonprofit of the Year; and Celia Garcia of Northridge Mall as Young Professional of the Year.

King City Lions host White Cane Day
KING CITY — King City Lions Club will host its annual White Cane Day on Friday, Oct. 2, with tables set up at Safeway, Grocery Outlet and Ace Hardware in King City for monetary donations.
The majority of funds collected will benefit local children by providing eye exams and eyeglasses. The club provides $4,000 to $8,000 each year for this service.
In addition, used glasses may be dropped off at Friday’s donation locations, as well as year round at the King City Library, 402 Broadway St. The glasses are refurbished for those in need.
“Remember, the proceeds benefit needy children in our community,” said King City Lions Club Chairman David Daines.
¿Qiensave? performs at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
SALINAS — Salinas-based Cumbia Urbana/Latin Alternative band ¿Qiensave? will perform at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco on Sunday, Oct. 4, marking the group’s first appearance at the festival.
Formed in Salinas in 2009 by brothers Carlos, Mario, Ricardo and William Cortez, ¿Qiensave? draws from cumbia as well as rock, reggae, hip-hop, ska and other influences. The band has performed at festivals and venues across the United States, Mexico and Colombia, including SXSW, Joshua Tree Music Festival and Square Roots.
The group has also shared stages with such artists as Los Lobos, Ozomatli, La Santa Cecilia, Celso Piña and Las Cafeteras.
