Salinas Valley Art Gallery features plein air artist
SALINAS — Salinas Valley Art Gallery will showcase the work of Monterey artist Suzanne Elliott during First Friday Salinas on Aug. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Elliott, view her impressionist-style oil paintings and hear stories about her upbringing in Africa. Her featured artist display includes plein air paintings of locations, such as Point Lobos, Moss Landing, Big Sur, Salinas Valley farmlands and Yosemite National Park.
“I enjoy the adventure of plein air painting, and I love the immediacy,” Elliott said. “There’s never been a time when I haven’t felt better after I’ve been outside painting. It’s always uplifting.”
The event will include refreshments, community activities and an art demonstration by SVAG artist Sherry McGlothlin on decoupage. A craft area will also be available for guests to create their own take-home artwork.
Elliott’s featured artist display will remain on view through Aug. 28 at Salinas Valley Art Gallery, 218 Main St., in Salinas.

KING CITY — Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated will host its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Cork & Plough Restaurant, 200 Broadway in King City.
The featured speaker will be Shane Lewis, a Republican candidate for Congress in California’s 18th District. The meeting is open to the public.

LAFCO seeks public member applicants
MONTEREY COUNTY — The Local Agency Formation Commission of Monterey County is seeking applicants for its Regular Public Member seat.
Monterey County residents with an interest in local government operations and organization are encouraged to apply. The appointment will be made by the County, city and special district members of the commission.
LAFCO is an independent countywide agency created by the state Legislature in 1963. The commission oversees city and special district boundaries, establishes spheres of influence, and conducts studies of government services to encourage orderly growth, preserve agricultural and open space lands, discourage urban sprawl and support efficient public services.
The public member seat term will expire in May 2030. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.
