KING CITY — The inaugural Valley Heritage Firecracker Court crowned its first royalty this month, launching what organizers hope will become a long-standing King City tradition that celebrates local youth while supporting community events.
Created through a partnership between the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and the Monterey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum (MCARLM), the new program is designed to give young people an opportunity to serve as community ambassadors while developing leadership and confidence.
“This year’s court included representatives from elementary school through high school,” organizers said.
The inaugural court includes Queen AriannaRose Medrano of King City, Princess Maria Sario of King City, Duchess Jenavieve Storelli of King City and Lady Layla Arburn of Pine Canyon.
All four candidates, who are involved in 4-H or FFA and participate in community activities, raised money through a community voting competition. Donation jars were placed at businesses throughout King City, with each dollar donated counting as one vote.
Organizers said the queen was determined by the candidate who had raised the most money by the Thursday before the July 3 fireworks celebration at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds.
Funds raised during the inaugural campaign will benefit the community fireworks show. Beginning next year, proceeds will be split evenly between the Chamber’s annual fireworks display and the museum’s Valley Heritage Days.

“Launching the very first Valley Heritage Firecracker Court exceeded every expectation I had,” said MCARLM Executive Director Teri Storelli. “The excitement from the candidates, the support from their families, our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, and the generosity of the community showed just how much people value traditions that bring us together.”
After campaigning throughout the month leading up to Independence Day, the candidates were crowned during the July 3 fireworks celebration. The following morning, the newly crowned court rode in the Fourth of July Parade downtown before serving as ambassadors during Valley Heritage Days at San Lorenzo Park.
Throughout the event, court members greeted visitors and presented awards to winners of the Valley Heritage Days Classic Car Show.
“Watching these young ambassadors proudly represent King City throughout Valley Heritage Days was incredibly rewarding, and I truly believe we’ve created something that will become a beloved annual tradition while helping support both our community fireworks celebration and Valley Heritage Days for years to come,” Storelli said.
Nominations for the 2027 Valley Heritage Firecracker Court will open in the spring at MCARLM.org. While this year’s inaugural court consisted entirely of young women, future participants will also be able to compete for the titles of Firecracker King, Prince, Duke and Lord.
“We hope to see the program continue to grow each year, with even more youth and families taking part in this exciting new community tradition,” organizers said.
