Fee-waived pet adoptions set for California Adopt-A-Pet Day

MONTEREY COUNTY — SPCA Monterey County will waive adoption fees for all adoptable pets during California Adopt-A-Pet Day on Saturday, June 6, thanks to support from SPCA donors.

The statewide event includes participation from more than 135 animal shelters across California, including SPCA Monterey County and Hitchcock Road Animal Services.

Adoptions will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at SPCA Monterey County, located at 1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway, across from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Shelter officials said no holds will be offered during the event and encouraged prospective adopters to arrive early.

Those interested in adopting a dog are asked to bring any resident dogs with them so the animals can meet before an adoption is finalized.

In addition to adoptions, the SPCA offers programs such as Doggy Day Out, which allows participants to take shelter dogs on outings, and Foster to Adopt, which gives families an opportunity to determine whether a pet is a good fit before completing an adoption.

County delays immigration issues hearing before board

MONTEREY COUNTY — A public hearing regarding interactions between Monterey County and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been postponed and will no longer be heard during the Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for June 9.

The issue was previously discussed by the Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 and April 14. During the April meeting, supervisors directed county staff to research, gather and analyze additional information for presentation at the June 9 meeting.

According to a county notice, the hearing is being rescheduled to allow staff additional time to prepare the information requested by the board.

Monterey County officials said the new hearing date and time will be announced through the county’s social media channels and news advisories once it has been scheduled.
