SALINAS VALLEY — King City High boys basketball team was edged 54-52 in a game with Monte Vista Christian last week.
Johell Carrillo scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds to lead King City in those two statistical categories.
The Mustangs finished the week with a 54-30 loss to North Salinas. Carrillo scored 10 points with 14 rebounds.
King City is currently in fifth place in the Cypress Division with a 4-5 record and 9-9 overall.
Greenfield Bruins split last week’s games, losing 59-58 against North Salinas and crushing Pacific Collegiate, 81-49.
In the game with the North Salinas, Johnny Miranda scored 29 points and Nate Trujillo joined his teammate in double figures with 15 points. Standouts on defense were Frankie Hernandez and Azael Martinez.
Against Pacific Collegiate, Miranda scored 31 points and Omar Flores had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Isabeles, Jaden Gonzalez and Xavier Lopez had good defensive games.
The Bruins are now 3-6 in the Cypress and 7-12 overall.
Soledad High boys basketball team showed why they are in first place in the Cypress Division with wins last week on the road to Gonzales and at home to Seaside.
In the rivalry game at Gonzales, Pedro Morales lighted up the Spartans with seven 3-point baskets for 29 points and added six assists in the 65-40 Soledad win. Jeronimo Morales contributed with 13 points and Ayden Urquidez joined his teammates in double figures.
Fernando De Leon scored 20 points to lead Gonzales in scoring.
Against Seaside, Pedro Morales scored 24 points and Urquidez scored 14 points in the 58-37 victory. Calvin DeShazo added 12 points and 12 rebounds for a double double.
Gonzales finished the week with a 62-51 setback against Monte Vista Christian. Alex Hernandez led Gonzales with 19 points, Edgar Mendoza had 12 points and Joshua Mariscal finished with 11 points.
In the Cypress Division, Soledad is at 8-1 with a 12-7 overall record, while Gonzales fell to 5-4 in the league and 9-10 overall.
In boys basketball games this week: Soledad is at Greenfield on Thursday; Gonzales plays Thursday at King City; and Greenfield plays Thursday in Soledad.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
The King City Lady Mustangs began the week with a 30-24 win over North Salinas.
Mikayla McLane had eight points and Alizah Carrillo added seven points. Crystal Paramo led King City with 15 rebounds.
Two nights later, Paramo had 11 points and McLane had 10 for the Mustangs in a 43-37 loss to Pajaro Valley.
King City is in fifth place in the Cypress Division with a 6-3 record and is 11-8 overall.
The Soledad girls had a big win at home last Wednesday, beating the Hollister Haybalers, 40-36. Jessica Morales led Soledad with 12 points and Aliyah Velarde added 10 points. Delylah Ocampo finished with seven points and Xochitl Orozco had six points.
In their second game of the week, the Lady Aztecs fell 50-36 to host Pacific Grove. Morales led Soledad with eight points, while Velarde and Atiana Landeros scored seven points apiece.
“Reminded the team that the season will have its ups and downs,” said Soledad head coach Kevin Pena. “We need to stay committed to doing our jobs.”
The Aztecs are in fifth place in the Gabilan Division at 4-5 and are 12-7 overall.
Gonzales is 1-6 in the Cypress Division and 1-9 overall.
Last Wednesday against the Marina Mariners, the Spartans suffered a 32-29 loss. Camilla Ramirez led Gonzales with 11 points, and Priscilla Hurtado added nine points.
Last Friday night the Spartans lost 45-20 to Pajaro Valley. Aalyse Martinez and Alexandra Camarena scored four points apiece to lead Gonzales in scoring.
In girls basketball games Thursday, Gonzales is at King City; Greenfield will host Marina; and Soledad travels to Salinas to play the Salinas Cowboys.
