KING CITY — For the first time since 2013, the King City High boys wrestling team has won a league championship title.

The Mustangs clinched the Mission Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League last Thursday in the Soledad High gymnasium.

King City defeated Greenfield, 48-32, in the final dual meet of the season to make them officially league champions.

Deandre Esparza, Angel Becerra, Armando Villasenor and Nate Vargas all picked up wins by pin for the Mustangs. Becerra (106), Villasenor (165) and Vargas (175/190) went undefeated in dual meet competition.

Mustangs head coach Miguel Zendejas could not contain his excitement for attaining the team goal of claiming a title this season.

“It feels awesome as the last three years we have been wrestling almost year-round,” Zendejas said. “Finally all the hard work is paying off.”

Assisting Zendejas this season were Alex Alonzo, Kayden Klahnm and head girls coach Orlando Garcia.

The PCAL tournament for boys and girls wrestling will take place this Saturday and include the Mission and Gabilan divisions at Watsonville High School.
