KING CITY — A young man seen carrying what appeared to be an assault-style rifle outside a Meyer Street residence Tuesday night was later identified and arrested, according to the King City Police Department.
Police said the incident occurred on Dec. 9 at about 9:51 p.m., when a resident reported “an unknown individual who contacted a residence while carrying what appeared to be an assault-style rifle.” The person was described as a young male wearing a hoodie, dark pants and a face mask.
KCPD said that through investigative work — including a review of City of King surveillance footage — and with support from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, officers were able to identify and locate the individual. The suspect was “subsequently contacted, arrested and booked into custody on unrelated charges,” police said Friday. The suspect’s name was not released.
The case has been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for potential additional charges.
According to KCPD, the incident “appears to have been a targeted response and not a random criminal act,” and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police issued a safety reminder urging residents to call 911 immediately if they see suspicious activity or someone displaying what looks like a firearm in concerning circumstances. KCPD said community members should avoid confronting individuals, move to a safe place and provide detailed descriptions to dispatchers when possible.
“Prompt reporting plays a critical role in ensuring public safety,” the department noted.
