SALINAS VALLEY — The fall high school sports season is over a month away, but student-athletes from South Monterey County are busy training for their favorite sports in the weight rooms, school gyms and on the playing fields.

King City head football coach Mac Villanueva has his players conditioning and weight lifting nearly every day of the week in preparation for the upcoming games in late August.

“Right now we are finishing with our South County 7-on-7s,” Villanueva said. “We have 7-on-7 this Saturday at MPC and then one next Saturday at Carmel. Dead Week is July 28-Aug. 1, so we are getting in as much work as we can.”

Villanueva uses the 7-on-7s to help prepare his players for the fall season.

“They (7-on-7s) help a lot with our boys learning our defensive scheme and our offensive pass concepts,” Villanueva said. “It’s also nice to have the boys be able to compete against other schools.”

Basketball games are also going on all over Monterey County this summer, including a recent summer league game between Gonzales and Soledad that took place in the Roger Fernando Gym at Gonzales High.
