
SALINAS VALLEY — South Monterey County boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played their final Pacific Coast Athletic League games of the season last week and will now be waiting for spots in the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs.
CCS brackets will be posted this week for division champions and at-large entries.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
King City High girls’ basketball team finished third in the Cypress Division with a 10-4 league record and 11-13 overall.
The Lady Mustangs played two games last week, beating Pajaro Valley, 56-23, on the road on Feb. 11, and defeating visiting Greenfield, 47-41, last Thursday night.
Amity Hearne had a double in the Pajaro Valley game with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Katia Slama scored 12 points and Crystal Paramo added 10 points.
In the Greenfield game, Janesa Lopez scored 15 points, Alizah Carrillo just missed double figures in scoring with nine points and Amity Hearne scored eight points with a team-high 19 rebounds, while Jocelyn Romero finished with seven points.
Jenny Villa led Greenfield in scoring against King City with 11 points. Aleena Salas scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds, Lesley Santiago scored nine points and had 13 rebounds and Jocylyn Mendoza scored nine points.
Greenfield began the week with a 26-23 home win against Pacific Collegiate. Santiago had a strong rebounding game with 25 rebounds and scored 14 points. Salas scored 10 points and came up with seven steals.
The Bruins were fifth in the Cypress Division with a 6-8 league record and 6-12 overall.
Gonzales High girls’ basketball team finished the regular season in second place with a 12-2 record in the Cypress Division, behind only Marina in the standings.
In their first game of the week, the Spartans defeated the Monterey Bay Academy, 70-20. Angelina Navarro had a productive night with 27 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, five steals and seven blocked shots.
Priscilla Hurtado scored 12 points, with six rebounds, one assist and two steals. Evelyn Perea added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and made three steals. Jackie Camacho scored nine points with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
In the final home game, the Spartans lost 59-33 to the Marina Mariners. Navarro had another strong game with 17 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks. Hurtado and Jenesis De La Rosa combined for nine points and nine rebounds.
The Soledad girls completed the regular season with a fifth-place finish in the Gabilan Division, compiling a 4-8 league record and 14-10 overall.
Soledad played its final game on the road on Feb. 13 in Salinas, falling by a 48-37 score to the Salinas Cowboys. Delylah Ocampo led the Aztecs in scoring with 13 points and Aliyah Velarde contributed with eight points.
Last season Soledad won the Mission Division and participated in the Division II playoffs.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Soledad boys played just one game to complete the Cypress Division schedule, beating the North Salinas Vikings, 54-52, on a layup and steal by Bryan Villegas in the last 30 seconds of the game.
Villegas finished the game with four assists and five steals. Pablo Morales led Soledad in scoring with 24 points, and Pedro Morales finished with 18 points.
The game was tied at 52-52 when Villegas came up with the steal and the game-winning layup.
Soledad will be waiting to be placed in the Division III bracket at Wednesday’s CCS seeding meeting.
Greenfield played two games last week, winning by a 70-25 score against Pacific Collegiate at the Santa Cruz Warriors’ Kaiser Arena.
Johnny Miranda had 21 points and Nate Trujillo had 11 points. Naythen Hernandez filled his stat sheet with nine points, 11 steals and dished out 12 assists.
At Senior Night in Greenfield, senior players Hernandez, Chris Morris, Angel Guerrero, David Diaz and JP Pulido were honored before the start of the game with visiting King City. The Bruins defeated the Mustangs, 79-53.
Morris led Greenfield in scoring with 24 points, and Miranda was one point behind him with 23 points. David Diaz chipped in with 10 points.
Gonzales played two games, downing King City, 59-37, at the Mustang gym and losing 52-35 to the North Salinas Vikings last Thursday night.
In the win against King City, the Spartans had three players score in double figures. Ray Blanco scored a team-high 17 points, while freshman Noah Rodriguez scored 11 points and Eduardo Barragan scored 10 points. Jayden Vasquez, Jaden Uribe and Fernando De Le Leon combined for 21 points.
In the Cypress Division, Gonzales had a 7-14 overall record and were 4-8, while King City was 4-17 overall and 3-9 in the league.
