SALINAS VALLEY — The Salinas Valley Titans under 10 age group Pony League baseball team claimed the sectional championships at last week’s tournament in Carmel Valley.
The tournament consisted of 10 teams from the Bay Area, Monterey County and Paso Robles that played six days of baseball.
“We won Tuesday and Thursday and then lost Saturday morning,” said Titans head coach Anthony Mena. “With the loss, we were sent to the losers bracket and we had to play two more games on Saturday to get to Sunday.”
The Titans started Sunday with an 8-2 win over a very good Pacific Grove team and had to beat Toro Pony League twice to win it all.
“We beat Toro 18-1 and 14-4 in the clinching game,” said Mena. “We move on to the next tournament as a #2 seed. The tournament is the Super Regionals in Ceres, Calif., consisting of the top eight teams in Northern California. The winner of the tournament goes to Los Angeles to play against Southern California’s best in the West Zone Tournament.”
The tournament in Ceres will begin play Thursday, July 11, and run through July 14.
Zander Sparks and Charlie Ballesta of the Titans were named Co-Tournament MVPs for their pitching and clutch hits throughout the week.
