MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County voters have returned their ballots to choose candidates for various state and local offices in the June 7 California Primary Election.

According to Monterey County Elections, there are 208,274 registered voters in the county. The latest numbers show that 34,758 ballots have been cast as of Tuesday, representing a 16.69% voter turnout so far.

In the primary election, all voters regardless of political party preference will see the same candidates for state and federal offices, which fall under the top-two primary rules. The two candidates with the most votes are nominated directly by voters to run in the Nov. 8 California General Election.

In addition, voters will decide on local contests as determined by their residential address. For local offices, if no candidate receives over 50% of the votes cast in the primary, the two candidates with the most votes will appear on the ballot in the general election.

Monterey County Elections officials began reporting results around 8 p.m. Tuesday, with subsequent hourly reports being issued until all ballots cast at the polls are counted.

Additional reports issued after Election Day include vote-by-mail ballots that were received by mail or at the polls; vote-by-mail ballots postmarked by Election Day and received during the seven days after the election; and provisional ballots.

As of Wednesday, the latest county and statewide election results are:
