KING CITY — Boxing began for members of the San Ardo and King City Boxing Clubs on Monday at the National Junior Olympics and Summer Festival that is taking place in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Bryan Cruz of the San Ardo Boxing Club was the first South County boxer to enter the ring on Monday for a scheduled match against Joel Hernandez of Montclair, Calif., in the 70-pound weight class.

Brackets had not been completed for the rest of the local boxers as of press time, but all six of the boxers that are representing South Monterey County will fight the minimum of three to four matches.

“The times of fights are still to be determined,” said Coach Rodolfo Tapia. “We will keep training here in Lubbock and attend the tournament. Aiden Almanza (King City) will fight his first match on Wednesday, and Kaleb Almanza (King City) and Grettell Cruz (San Ardo) will begin on Thursday.”

The tournament will start at 5 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, and the starting times will change to noon from Friday to the rest of the weekend.
