KING CITY — King City Council has adopted an urgency ordinance establishing a process for issuing citations to those who do not comply with the requirement of wearing face coverings while at work, in businesses and around other people as instituted by state and county health orders.
The ordinance takes effect immediately, as of July 23.
The action was taken in order to help prevent further spread of Covid-19 in response to concerns regarding the current rate of new cases and hospitalizations. The City of King will continue to seek compliance primarily through public education, according to City Manager Steve Adams.
“Most of the community has responded extremely well to the changes required during this difficult time and the City is very appreciative, but we need to continue to improve since cases continue to increase,” Adams said.
He added that the new ordinance is designed to provide another tool for the King City Police Department to “effectively enforce these measures with individuals who refuse to comply voluntarily in order to protect public health.”
Citations begin at $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense and $500 for the third and subsequent violations.
Since the pandemic began, the City of King has implemented a number of measures involving enforcement of the County Health Officer’s orders, safety of City facilities and staff, public health and education, business assistance and public assistance.
“It is important that we all make these temporary sacrifices in order to protect each other’s health and to enable businesses to stay open so people can continue to work,” said Mayor Mike LeBarre.
