KING CITY — Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide after a person was found fatally shot early Sunday in King City.

Shortly after midnight on Aug. 23, officers from the King City Police Department and deputies from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunshots in the area of the Hartnell College’s King City Education Center.

Responding law enforcement personnel found a person suffering from an apparent gunshot wound near the satellite campus at North Second and Lynn streets. Despite emergency response efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation. The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed or heard anything related to the incident to contact the Sheriff’s Office. Residents and businesses in the area are also being asked to review surveillance, doorbell or other video footage that may have captured activity related to the shooting.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No additional information is being released at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
