KING CITY — A Washington state man was sentenced Jan. 28 to six years in state prison for a 2025 crash on Highway 101 near Jolon Road in King City that killed two passengers.

Anthony Harvey, 39, was sentenced after pleading to one count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of felony driving under the influence causing injury, with a great bodily injury enhancement, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said. The convictions count as a “Strike” under California’s Three Strikes Law.

The crash occurred shortly before midnight on Feb. 4, 2025, when California Highway Patrol officers responded to a solo vehicle collision. The DA’s office said officers found a Ford U-Haul Transit Van with “significant damage to the front end, roof, and rear axle, indicating the vehicle had rolled off the road.”

Two rear passengers, Sequan Taylor and Kayla Smith, were extricated by fire personnel but later died from their injuries.

Harvey told officers he lost control of the van while avoiding a deer, the DA’s office said.

Officers found a small bag of a white powdery substance on him, suspected to be fentanyl. The DA’s office said a DUI and drug evaluation determined Harvey was driving under the influence of multiple drugs, and a toxicology analysis confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, fentanyl and marijuana in his system.

The case was investigated by the CHP and prosecuted by the DA’s specialized DUI Vertical Prosecution Unit, which is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
