KING CITY — After beating the North Salinas Vikings 3-0 at the King City gym on Sept. 10, the King City Lady Mustang volleyball team completed the pre-season schedule last Friday with a 3-0 victory against the host Soledad Aztecs.

Hollyn Hearne and Amity Hearne combined for 18 kills, 13 digs and four aces against Soledad, while Avery Munoz added six kills. Xienna Novoa and Jocelyn Romero combined for 26 digs and four aces, and Stephanie Velasquez and Janesa Lopez had 14 assists apiece.

In the home game with North Salinas, Iran Ibarra and Hollyn Hearne combined for 16 kills, 13 digs and five aces. Amity Hearne and Raylie Moore combined for nine kills and three aces. Lopez and Velasquez contributed with 28 assists and Novoa added 14 digs and four aces.

“We had another good week of play,” said King City head coach Christine Luna. “The team is continuing to play well and having fun.”

The Lady Broncos had a good week too, beating North Salinas and Soledad in two sets and also participated in the Jeff Lamb Spikefest at Los Altos and Wilcox High Schools.

Last Saturday the King City High volleyball program hosted a free volleyball clinic for kindergarten to fifth grade and sixth to eighth grade at the Mustang gym. King City will host another clinic on Saturday, Oct. 19, with kinder to fifth from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and sixth to eighth from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m.

On Tuesday in Watsonville, King City opened the Gabilan Division at Monte Vista Christian (after press deadlines) and will host the Hollister Haybalers Thursday night.

GREENFIELD

At Greenfield, the Lady Bruins improved to 9-2 overall with a 3-0 pre-season win over Gonzales on Sept. 9 and began the Cypress Division with a 3-0 sweep of the North Monterey County Condors last Friday in Castroville.

“Kids are playing really well, and it was great to start league 1-0 after sweeping North County on Friday,” said Greenfield head coach Adrian Trujillo. “The goal is to remain focused and continue to practice hard to keep up this level of play.”

In the win over Gonzales, sophomore Aleena Salas finished in double-figures with 23 kills and 13 digs and teammate Jocelyn Mendoza added 28 assists and 13 digs.

Against the host Condors, Salas had 19 kills and 18 digs, while Mendoza contributed with 19 assists and 10 digs. On Tuesday, the Lady Bruins played against Palma in Salinas, and will host the Marina Mariners Thursday afternoon.

SOLEDAD

The Soledad Aztecs began the week with a 3-1 loss to Santa Catalina in Monterey on Sept. 10.

Delilah Ocampo led the Aztecs with eight kills, Valeria Segura had four blocks and Giselle Zepeda recorded 10 digs.

In their first game of Mission Division play against Watsonville on Sept. 12, the Aztecs were beaten by a 3-0 score.

Then, last Friday at home against King City, the Aztecs lost by a 3-0 score. Ocampo and Layla Rodriguez combined for seven kills, Camryn Gudino and Valeria Segura had six blocks combined, and Zepeda led the team with 21 digs while Lilly Ramirez finished with nine digs.

Soledad will play four games this week, including a non-league game Tuesday at home with Morro Bay. On Monday, Soledad played at North County, will host Gonzales on Wednesday night and then travel to Monterey on Friday for a game with the Toreadores.

GONZALES

The Gonzales Spartans are 3-3 overall and began the Mission Division with a 3-0 home loss to Monterey.

On Sept. 9, Greenfield handed visiting Gonzales a 3-0 loss.

This week, the Spartans played Monday at Marina, traveled to Soledad for a game Tuesday, and close out a busy week with a home game on Friday with the Everett Alvarez Eagles.
