KING CITY — King City High School girls’ swim team achieved a historic victory earlier this month at the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL) Championships, ending a 27-year drought by becoming Cypress League champions for the first time.
The team’s triumph was highlighted by strong performances in the relays, with the Lady Mustangs taking first place in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay, setting the tone early in the competition, which took place at Hartnell College in Salinas on May 2.
Key individual performances from Mia Lopez and Hayden Munoz, who finished first and second in their events, also contributed significantly to the team’s success. Several other swimmers placed in the top five, helping King City secure the overall victory.
Heading into the meet, the Lady Mustangs held a 6-1 record, tied with Anzar and Seaside for the league lead.
Coach Cheryll Hill commented, “I want to congratulate all of the girls for their hard work and dedication.” She also praised the Mustang boys for their strong season, emphasizing the overall team effort that led to this historic achievement.
The celebration was echoed by the King City Recreation Department, which oversees the King City Pool — home to the Mustangs’ swim team.
“Girls WIN!!!! PCAL CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to the KCHS Girls Swim team on this huge accomplishment. Your hard work all season has paid off. We are proud of you!” the department posted May 2 on Facebook.
