Realignment begins next fall for local teams
Change is coming next fall for local high school athletic teams as 33 schools that make up the tri-county area will be realigned to form new divisions as part of the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL).
South County teams start season
Sportsmanship basketball games were played last week to kick of the season by the Soledad and Gonzales boys teams and the King City and Greenfield girls teams.
Local karate students earn black belts
Students from Carrilloās Karate Studios in Greenfield and King City earned 1st degree and 2nd degree black belts respectively on Nov. 18 in Milpitas at the Funakoshi Shotakan Studios.
All-League Coastal team announced
Greenfield High School quarterback Andy Hernandez was voted the Back of the Year of the Mission Trail Athletic League Division. Hernandez, a senior exhibited his versatility on the field gaining over 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards passing for the season.
Best of the class
Athletes from Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City were enshrined into the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2017 on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Hartnell College.
Greenfield earns State meet berth
The Greenfield boys cross country team placed second in the Central Coast Division III championships on Saturday to earn a trip to the State Meet.
Shepherd named Co-MVP of Mission Trail Athletic League
An outstanding junior season earned King City Lady Mustang volleyball player Grace Shepherd the Co-Most Valuable Player of the Mission Trail Athletic League that she shares with McKinley Fox of Santa Catalina. Shepherd was joined on the MTAL first-team by teammate and setter senior Megan Flores. Zeni Silva was the last Lady Mustang to be a co-MVP in the league.
Tourney kicks off basketball season
Basketball balls will be flying through the air on Friday as local teams take part in the South County high school basketball tournaments at King City High School for the boys and Gonzales High for the girls.
Lady Mustangs to play in semifinals
Grace Shepherd hammered down 40 kills in two games to lead the King City Lady Mustangs into tonightās Central Coast Section Division IV semifinals at Scotts Valley High School.
King City routs Bruins in last game
Six players scored touchdowns as the King City Mustangs beat Greenfield 50-20 on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium for the final regular season game for both teams. King City improved to 6-4 and Greenfield fell to 3-7 overall after the non-league loss.
