CALIFORNIA — California voters have approved Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment allowing the state legislature to redraw congressional districts for the next three election cycles before returning control to the independent redistricting commission.
Statewide, the measure passed with more than 63% support. Supporters said the change ensures fairer representation following national redistricting shifts, while opponents criticized it as a partisan move by Democrats to influence future congressional maps.
In Monterey County, voters backed the measure 53,348 to 25,296 — a 67.8% to 32.2% margin — in the latest results available. Local turnout was at 36%, or 78,709 of 218,619 registered voters.
The new maps are expected to take effect ahead of the 2026 elections.
