KING CITY — Southern Monterey County Foundation (SMCF) has awarded $25,300 in grants this year to more than a dozen nonprofit organizations providing services in King City and surrounding communities.

Guided by an advisory board of local residents, SMCF raises money to provide grants each year to strengthen communities in South Monterey County, from King City to areas south.

“Grants from our foundation have made an amazing impact, from purchasing science kits for youth in San Ardo, providing free legal services for South County seniors to supporting youth sports and arts,” said Jamie Lynn Jones, chair of the SMCF Advisory Board. “I support the foundation because it’s a great investment in our community.”

SMCF, an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, has granted more than $168,000 to 47 projects and programs serving South Monterey County residents since 2014.

Grant-making is made possible by the support of local individuals, families and businesses. This year’s grants were also supported in part by Chevron, Jones added.

A total of 14 organizations are SMCF’s 2021 grant recipients: City of King Recreation Department; Girls Inc. of the Central Coast; Greenfield Community Science Workshop, serving King City and San Ardo; Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services; King City Boxing Club; King City in Bloom; Kinship Center; Mee Memorial Hospital; Monterey College of Law; San Antonio Community Betterment Association; Sol Treasures; South County Animal Rescue; Special Kids Connect; and The Parenting Connection.

“Southern Monterey County Foundation has been critical to our success,” said Jeff Hinderscheid, executive director of Sol Treasures, based in King City. “Sol Treasures nurtures and awakens art within our children and all of our community members. It has been impactful in our ability to pivot during hard times.”

In addition, SMCF is participating in Monterey County Gives! end-of-year giving campaign this year. Each gift before Dec. 31 will receive a pro rata match. Learn more about the campaign at montereycountygives.com/nonprofit/southern-monterey-county-foundation/.
