South County Trashion Show makes long-awaited return

Alliance on Aging fundraiser features latest fashions crafted from recycled materials

KING CITY — Alliance on Aging’s South County Trashion Show returned to the runway last week after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, featuring the latest fashions crafted from recycled and repurposed materials.

The Sept. 13 fundraiser and luncheon was once again held inside the Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.

Under this year’s theme, “American Bandstand,” 25 models — including Jack, a rescue dog — wore unique designs while strutting down the runway in front of 250 guests.

“It was thrilling to see so many of our friends from South County and share this fun event after two long years,” said Teresa Sullivan, executive director of Alliance on Aging.

Participating organizations included King City Rural 4-H, 1st Capital Bank, Ausonio, Community Food Pantry, Mee Memorial Healthcare System, Monterey County Dance Foundation, Salinas Valley Recycles’ Resource and Recovery Team, ITN Monterey County, King City Cinemas and Cattlewomen of Monterey County.

Butch Lindley took on the role of emcee, with Audra Vaccarezza returning as fashion commentator. Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal started off the show with a medley of songs, while Susan Gill — this year’s presenting sponsor along with her husband David — gave a testimonial.

Also making an appearance was King City Mayor Mike LeBarre, as a model escort, and Soledad Mayor Anna Velazquez, who was one of the show’s models.

Proceeds from the event help support Alliance on Aging’s services for seniors in South Monterey County.
