SALINAS VALLEY — The Soledad High boys’ soccer team is 2-0 in the Cypress Division as the Aztecs won their first two games of the new year.
The Aztecs began the division with a 1-0 win at North Monterey County on a goal by Daniel Magana and assist by Jesus Ortiz.
Last Thursday, Soledad won 2-1 in a home game against Monte Vista Christian. Goals were scored by Magana and Jason Rico off assists by Ortiz and Joshua Guzman.
The Aztecs improved to 6-1-3 overall and continues divisional play with a home game Wednesday night with Ceiba College Prep and plays in Santa Cruz on Friday against Pacific Collegiate.
Gonzales boys played just one game last week, claiming a 3-1 victory against the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. Jorge Uribe finished with one goal and one assist; Emmanuel Valdez scored a goal with one assist; Sebastian Ramirez had an assist; and Luis Cabada had five saves at goalie.
The Spartans played Monday at home against Robert Louis Stevenson and will next compete on Wednesday in Watsonville and at home on Friday against the King City Mustangs.
King City defeated visiting Stevenson, 3-2, as Rafa Merino, Bryan Gonzalez and Luis Ramirez scored goals.
Last Thursday at Watsonville, the Mustangs lost a tough match by a 3-1 score to the Wildcatz. Abiel Gomez scored the one goal for King City.
The Mustangs (4-5-0 overall, 1-1-0 Mission Division) played Monday at Salinas High and host the Seaside Spartans on Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium.
Greenfield boys played three games last week.
Last Monday the Bruins finished in a 1-1 tie against North Salinas at home. David Zavala scored the Greenfield goal.
Last Wednesday the Bruins lost 2-1 to host Alisal with David Arias scoring the Greenfield goal. In their last game of the week, the Bruins beat Monterey, 2-1, with goals by Braulio Zuniga. Jesus Pantoja earned an assist on the winning goal.
Greenfield (3-3-3 overall, 1-1-1 Gabilan Division) played at Palma on Tuesday and will travel to battle the Hollister Haybalers on Thursday night.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The King City Lady Mustangs hosted Greenfield last Friday and played to a 1-1 stalemate.
Isabella Hernandez-Swift scored the King City goal with an assist by Jocelyn Olivera, and Alexeen Sanchez scored the Bruin goal with an assist by Lizbeth Perez.
King City (1-5-2 overall, 0-0-1 Cypress Division) played at St. Francis on Tuesday and will host Gonzales on Thursday.
The Bruin girls began the week with a 2-2 tie at North Salinas, with two goals by Sanchez. Kimberly Zavala had 14 saves at goalie.
Greenfield hosted Palma on Tuesday and plays at St. Francis on Thursday in Watsonville.
Gonzales had two byes last week but did have one game against the Palma Chieftains at home last Wednesday.
Janelle Garcia scored three goals in the Spartans’ 3-2 win. Ariana Fajardo, Jennifer Fajardo and Izabella Mandujano had assists, while Natalia Valdez had three important saves.
The Lady Spartans (2-6-0 overall, 1-0-0 Cypress Division) hosted North Salinas on Tuesday and will play at King City on Thursday.
