SALINAS VALLEY — South Monterey County rivals met on the turf at Gonzales High last week, with the host Spartans defeating the Greenfield Bruins, 1-0, in boys’ soccer.

The Spartans’ Jorge Uribe scored the winning goal off an assist by Macario Chavarin. Gonzales goalie Luis Cabada finished with six saves in the shutout win to help the Spartans improve to 4-1.

“The game with Greenfield was crucial to get the win and get back in the win column,” said Gonzales head coach Miguel Vidauri. “We had a great week even after losing a hard-fought battle to defending state champion Everett Alvarez. The game could have gone either way, but I’m happy how the team battled through adversity.”

In the loss to Everett Alvarez, Jorge Uribe scored two goals and Sammy Ochoa added a goal of his own for the Spartans. Emmanuel Valdez was credited with an assist on the Ochoa goal.

Gonzales hosted Rancho San Juan on Monday for their only game of the week.

The Gonzales girls’ soccer team (1-2) won last Monday by forfeit to Anzar, lost by a 1-0 score last Wednesday to North Monterey County and were beaten 5-1 last Friday at home by Alisal.

Freshman Fernanda Cisneros scored the goal against Alisal, with an assist credited to Jennifer Fajardo.

The Lady Spartans played at Everett Alvarez on Tuesday night and will host Soledad on Friday.

GREENFIELD

The Greenfield boys’ soccer team is 1-1 in the pre-season as they began the year with a 2-2 tie with Salinas High on the Bruin pitch.

Anthony Zuniga scored the first Greenfield goal with an assist from Alex Sanchez. Zuniga scored the second goal with an assist by Jesus Ortiz.

In the game with Gonzales, Bruin goalie Daniel Altamarano kept Greenfield in the game with three crucial saves in the second half.

“I hope that against King City, we can come back and play a solid game,” said Greenfield head coach Eliseo Ayala. “It was a rough start last week to begin the season.”

Greenfield plays at Pebble Beach on Wednesday against host Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Greenfield girls beat Carmel on the road 2-1 last Monday, with goals by Destiny Hernandez and Alexeen Sanchez. Yesenia Patricio and Anilu Olvera assisted on the goals.

The Lady Bruins (1-1) play Wednesday at Santa Catalina, travel to Santa Cruz on Thursday to play Pacific Collegiate and host the Anzar Hawks on Friday.

KING CITY

The King City boys had a tough start of the week with a 2-0 loss to Monterey and a 3-2 loss to Soledad, before rebounding and defeating North Monterey County by a 4-2 score.

“Tough start to the pre-season,” said King City head coach Orlando Zendejas. “The team is getting better each week and getting more comfortable on the field.”

Scoring goals during the week for the Mustangs were: Rafael Merino and Bryan Gonzales with two goals each and Jesus Quintana and Randy Cid with solo goals. Eduardo Acosta and Emmanuel Cruz were credited with assists.

King City played Monday at Greenfield and plays Thursday at home against Carmel.

The King City girls’ soccer team is 1-2 in pre-season play after playing three games last week. The Lady Mustangs started the season with a 5-0 home win to Seaside, followed by a 2-0 setback at Alisal and a 3-1 loss on Saturday at Santa Catalina in Monterey.

Against the Seaside Spartans, Janessa Correa scored three goals, while Isabella Hernandez-Swift and Yazmin Reyes-Ramirez scored solo goals. Melody Sanchez assisted on three of the goals while Destiny Mosqueda and Jeslene Merino-Gomez finished with individual assists.

In the loss to Santa Catalina, Isabella Hernandez-Swift scored the lone goal for King City.

The Lady Mustangs hosted Harbor on Tuesday and will play at Monte Vista Christian on Thursday afternoon.

SOLEDAD

The Soledad boys’ soccer team is 1-0-2 to start the pre-season schedule.

The Aztecs started the season with a 3-3 tie against Salinas High. Goals were scored by Daniel Magana, Jesus Ortiz and Alexander Pizano.

Last Monday the Aztecs finished in a 2-2 tie with Soquel. Magana and Ortiz scored the Soledad goals.

In last Wednesday’s 3-2 win over King City, Ortiz and Pizano scored for the Aztecs.

Soledad will host Seaside on Wednesday and travels to Half Moon Bay for a game on Saturday.

The Soledad girls had three games this past week.

In the first game, the Lady Aztecs lost 5-1 to the Paso Robles Bearcats. Nichole Gonzalez scored for Soledad with an assist by Clarissa Valdez. Goalie Avery Fregoso finished with six saves.

In the second game of the week, Soledad shut out Greenfield, 3-0. Myrin Amilpa scored two goals and Bella Torres had one assist and scored a goal. Fregoso made three saves.

Last Saturday in Salinas, the Aztecs blanked the visiting North Salinas Vikings, 6-0. Gonzalez had a hat trick with three goals, Michelle Rodriguez had a goal, Faith Ceja scored a goal and Amilpa scored a goal and added two assists. Torres and Valdez had assists, while Fregoso made two saves.

The Lady Aztecs (2-2) hosted Pacific Collegiate on Tuesday night and will play at Gonzales on Friday.
