FAIR BEGINS
KING CITY — The 79th Annual Salinas Valley Fair begins Thursday, May 18, and continues through Sunday, May 21, at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, 625 Division St., in King City. Gates open at 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily, with the Fair closing at midnight Thursday through Saturday and at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Once again the celebration brings family-friendly activities and entertainment, including exhibits, carnival rides and games, traditional fair foods, live music, a petting zoo and more. RECOVERY RUN
MONTEREY COUNTY — Community Human Services (CHS), along with Montage Health’s Prescribe Safe Initiative, Salinas Valley Health and iHeart Radio, are inviting the Monterey County community to participate in the 2023 Virtual Recovery Run to help spread the word about the opioid crisis. Runners can choose to complete a 5K or 3K run/walk by May 20 and receive a commemorative race T-shirt and medal. Registration is open through May 20 at bit.ly/3MnXaDs. Proceeds from the Recovery Run will go to support CHS’ efforts to provide harm-reduction methods to the community, such as Narcan, the opioid overdose reversal medication, as well as free and low-cost drug treatment options to residents. In addition, Narcan will be distributed free of charge at an Opioid Memorial Flag Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sherwood Park in Salinas.
WORKSHOP GRANT
GREENFIELD — City of Greenfield recently announced that the Greenfield Community Science Workshop has received a grant from Yellow Brick Road in Carmel. The grant will support the Workshop and enhance its programs for the community. Over the past 30-plus years, the Yellow Brick Road Benefit Shop has donated nearly $7.6 million to Monterey County nonprofits; however, more volunteers are needed to help continue this philanthropy.
