RECALL ELECTION

SALINAS — The petition period for the official Signatures In-Lieu of Filing Fees in the Sept. 14, 2021, California Gubernatorial Recall Election is set to close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6. The period opened on July 1. For detailed information related to the recall election, including candidate guidelines and filing requirements, visit the California Secretary of State website. Those wishing to file should schedule an appointment via email at Ca***************@co.us or by phone 831-796-1499. Official documents may be obtained from and filed at the Monterey County Elections Department, 1441 Schilling Place – North Building, in Salinas.


TAX RETURNS

MONTEREY COUNTY — United Way Monterey County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service completed its 12th year with 1,232 federal and state tax returns filed for Monterey County residents, generating nearly $2,253,598 in refunds. The 2020 VITA program was made possible by 23 IRS-trained and certified volunteers who dedicated 1,617 hours during the 2020 tax season. UWMC continues to offer a free “Self-Prep Tax Filing” service, which is provided at the following locations via appointment only through September 2021: UWMC’s Monterey office, 60 Garden Court, Suite 350, Monterey; and Center for Employment Training’s Salinas office (strictly drop off by appointment; in-person assistance not available). WHALEFEST DATES

MONTEREY — The 12th Annual Whalefest Monterey will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, 2022, according to an announcement last week. The family-friendly event will feature a two-day symposium with world-renowned marine experts at and around Old Fisherman’s Wharf and the Custom House Plaza, Monterey State Historic Park. Whalefest Monterey includes fun activities for all ages, musicians, boat displays and dozens of marine-related interactive exhibits by numerous local organizations.
