KING CITY — Salinas Valley Fair has announced the completion of the extensive renovation of the Expo Building, marking a new chapter in its storied history.
The 12,000-square-foot, multipurpose facility underwent upgrades in 2022 and 2023, transforming it into a venue for a wide array of community events.
The renovation project focused on enhancing the functionality and accessibility of the Expo Building. Notable improvements include the installation of new ADA accessible bathrooms, a modern catering kitchen, upgraded flooring and basketball hoops, among other enhancements.
“These updates ensure that the Expo Building meets the highest standards of comfort and convenience for all visitors,” stated the Fair in a news release.
As a year-round venue, this Salinas Valley Fairgrounds building plays a crucial role in hosting private events, fundraisers and sporting events, such as youth basketball and volleyball games. The multi-purpose design allows for seamless transitions between various activities, providing a flexible space that caters to the needs of the Salinas Valley community.
“The successful completion of renovating the Expo Building was made possible through the SB5 grant and the generous financial contributions from the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation,” the Fair stated. “Their dedication to preserving and improving the fairgrounds’ community spaces has been instrumental in turning the vision of the Expo Building into a reality.”
The Fair Board hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication May 11 at the fairgrounds in King City to celebrate this momentous achievement and pay tribute to the late Nate Holaday, who made extensive contributions to the Salinas Valley Fair. The ceremony unveiled the newly installed sign stating, “Salinas Valley Fair Expo Building in Memory of Nate Holaday.”
Holaday’s impact on the Salinas Valley Fair and the local community is immeasurable.
“As a dedicated Salinas Valley Fair Board Director, member of the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation and Director of the Junior Livestock Auction for many years, Nate poured his heart into supporting local 4H and FFA kids,” stated the Fair. “His selflessness and unwavering passion continue to inspire and uplift our community.”
For more than five decades, Holaday served the community by volunteering his time with the King City Young Farmers, Knights of Columbus, King City High Mustang Bench, Hartnell College Foundation, King City Volunteer Fire Department and the Mission San Antonio Restoration Committee, as well as the Salinas Valley Fair Board.
“There could not be a more fitting tribute for this true pillar of our community,” said Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez on social media. “Nate was from here, and for here. He represented the best of us in every way and this tribute to his memory is a fitting way to honor his legacy of commitment and steadfastness for our region. Thank you to the Salinas Valley Fair for naming the newly renovated Expo Building in his memory.”
