KING CITY — Music, salads and deserts brought together members of the King City community on April 21 at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds cafeteria building.
The event was a luncheon, hosted by the Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated, to raise money for high school student scholarships. The group gives out two $1,000 scholarships to a King City High School student and a Greenfield High School student.
Scholarship applicants are asked to write an essay about “What is Americanism and What it Means to Me.” The applicants also have to achieve a 3.0 GPA or above and have recognition for school and community service. The scholarship applicants must be going on to a four-year university or college or higher learning. The final requirement is that the applicant must be a relative of a registered Republican family member.
“The members made dishes to serve during the event and part of the proceeds funded the two scholarships,” President Karen Leonhard said.
The scholarship recipients will be announced at a later time.
Playing music for the event was “One Night Stand,” a two-member group of Lee Schell and David Norum.
Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated meets once a month and features different speakers involved in politics. The group also registers legal residents to vote.
