SALINAS VALLEY — Last week South Monterey County football teams were able to use helmets at practice for the first time and put on full pads at the end of the week to mark the end of the dead period in the Central Coast Section.

Gonzales, Soledad, King City and host Greenfield will kick off the football season on Friday, Aug. 23, at the South County Jamboree. Games in the JV divisions begin at 5pm, followed by the varsity games.

Football had the extra week to assimilate to the equipment.

Cross country, volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf, field hockey and flag football all returned to practice this Monday.

Every school in South County offers football, cross country and volleyball. Gonzales High offers girls tennis, and Greenfield offers field hockey. Soledad and King City field girls flag football.
