SOUTH COUNTY — Community members cheered on dozens of cyclists as local resident Yolanda Maldonado fired the start gun Tuesday morning in downtown King City, signaling the beginning of Stage 3 in the men’s professional cycling race for the 2018 Amgen Tour of California.

Cyclists took off southbound from Broadway Street toward San Lucas on their 122-mile route before making a loop back through King City and racing north through Greenfield along Elm Avenue and Arroyo Seco Road, ending in the afternoon at Laguna Seca Raceway in Salinas.

The 13th annual Amgen Tour featured the world’s best cyclists competing along a seven-stage course that traverses hundreds of miles of the state’s roadways from May 13 to 19. King City was a first-time host city for the event and planned several festivities, including a decorated bicycle wheel art show.
