MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Superior Court has announced that Brian Jones was appointed as its newest judge, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Marla Anderson.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the appointment on Oct. 31, and Jones was sworn in as a judge on Nov. 6.

Jones, from Monterey, has served as a deputy district attorney in the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office since 2013. He worked as an instructor at the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training from 2022 to 2025 and received a Juris Doctor degree from the Monterey College of Law.

“I am thankful to Gov. Newsom for the trust he has placed in me through this appointment to the Bench as a Superior Court Judge,” Jones stated. “As an attorney, I held deep respect for the judges before whom I appeared each day. I am honored and humbled to now join their ranks as a judicial officer. I look forward to working with all of the outstanding judges, court staff and attorneys in our community. I am committed to upholding the values of fairness, impartiality, integrity and justice. I am grateful to live in Monterey County and look forward to serving the community where my family and I have made our home.”

Presiding Judge Carrie Panetta added, “The Monterey County Superior Court is grateful for Gov. Newsom’s appointment of Brian Jones as Monterey County’s newest judge. Judge Jones has extensive criminal trial experience, and I am confident that he will provide exemplary service to the court and to the people of Monterey County.”

Jones will preside over a criminal misdemeanor department at the Salinas Courthouse.
