KING CITY — City Manager Steve Adams announced last week that Robert “Bob” Masterson has been appointed as King City’s next chief of police. Masterson will assume the role on June 27, succeeding Chief James Hunt, who will retire on June 26.

Masterson is returning to a familiar role, having previously served as the city’s police chief from 2016 to 2020. Since then, he has held several leadership positions in law enforcement, most recently serving as police captain for the King City Police Department since 2023.

“I believe Bob Masterson is uniquely and highly qualified to lead our Police Department in the future to continue the great progress we’ve made in establishing a model police department and safer community,” said Adams in the May 19 announcement. “We are fortunate to have someone with Capt. Masterson’s experience, expertise, proven leadership and high ethical standards to step in upon Chief Hunt’s departure.”

Adams also praised outgoing Chief Hunt for his leadership.

“Chief Hunt has been an amazing chief, and I would like to express my appreciation for his tremendous service to King City,” he said.

Masterson brings more than three decades of law enforcement experience, including 20 years with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, and service as chief of police for both the College of Sequoias Community College District and the City of Atascadero. He also served as Director of Reaching Youth, a faith-based nonprofit organization.

During his first tenure as King City’s police chief, Masterson led efforts to rebuild department staffing, reform internal policies, strengthen community trust and combat youth violence. His leadership was key in implementing the city’s Comprehensive Plan to End Youth Violence and achieving notable reductions in crime.

“I am honored to once again serve as the chief of police for King City,” Masterson said. “During my time away, I have gained valuable experience and a broader perspective, which I now bring back to the department. I look forward to leading our team, reconnecting with the community, and building upon the strong foundation that has already been established within the City and Police Department.”
