To the Editor:

Some of our public media and elected officials are bashing our Fourth of July celebrations; they are claiming our patriotism is racist. These poor souls seem to love denigrating America and yet, at the same time, also love the freedom that allows them to do so.

They should remember that freedom was bought by blood.

I am an 80-year-old man who grew up part of a family that had only one book, The Bible; but I have read what I could and paid attention, such as the work of Martin Luther King Jr.

My last book, ā€œHow to Be an Antiracistā€ by Ibram X. Kendi, was supposed to be about racial justice and antiracist orthodoxy; it is not. This book is about a belief that any system that produces unequal outcomes must be racist. And a child born white should be ashamed.

This outlook seems to go along with what is something called the ā€œCritical Race Theory.ā€ Iā€™ve heard it will be taught in schools because it is believed of educational value. I respect the teachers in our schools, but it is the responsibility of the parents; as to what is taught in our schools.

Reading books by these authors has helped me understand our country: Thomas Sowell, Heather Mac Donald, Charles Krauthammer and Whittaker Chambers. At my age, it is all history.

Also, one book, ā€œHunger of Memoryā€ by Richard Rodriguez, is one of the gutsiest books I have ever read.
